How much does the Spanish tax office take?
Lottery prizes in Spain carry a special 20% tax on the part that exceeds €40,000 per décimo. El Gordo pays €400,000 per décimo: the first €40,000 are tax-free and the tax office keeps 20% of the remaining €360,000 (€72,000), so you keep €328,000. For shares, the tax-free amount is split in the same proportion: with €5 of a décimo (a quarter) you receive €100,000 of El Gordo, of which €10,000 is tax-free, and you keep €82,000.
The tax is withheld by the bank when you cash the prize and is final for Spanish tax residents. If you are tax resident in another country, check whether you must also declare the prize there.
